Proper planning and preparation is the key to a successful move. Follow our proven checklist below to ensure a smooth an easy relocation.
- 8 weeks before you move…
- Organize and sort through attics, lofts, basement and garage
- Dispose of things you don’t want to take/shred important documents
- Call your local waste management service and order a dumpster
- Resolve what to do with prohibited items
- Schedule medical/dental appointments
- Plan ahead for air travel
- 6 weeks before you move…
- Call Magic Moving & Storage to reserve and confirm your move date
- Prepare your mailing list, notify post office and send out “change of address”
- Notify banks, savings accounts, credit cards, magazines, any other organizations
- Consider having a garage sale
- Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date
- Return library books, movie rentals
- Advise carrier if you purchased any new household goods
- 4 weeks before you move…
- Notify utilities and services
- Telephone, cell phone
- Gas, electric
- Water, garbage
- Cable
- Internet
- Security alarm company
- Make list of items to take with you: documents, medical records, medication, keys
- Decide on clothes/personal items to travel with you; kids (favorite toys) pets (food)
- Make arrangements to disassemble difficult items: pool tables, swing sets, exercise equipment
- Cancel newspapers, subscriptions
- Find new home for your plant

- 2 weeks before your move…
- Arrange time off from work to prepare for the move and be present on move day
- Begin packing. Tightly seal boxes with tape and label legibly in LARGE LETTERS on 2 sides of each box
- Remove fragile / loose items from drawers, closets, cabinets and pack carefully
- Remove all permanently affixed items from walls/ceilings (drapes, ceiling fans, etc)
- Deplete the food from your refrigerator/freezer/pantry
- Arrange babysitter for the children and pets on moving day…IMPORTANT
- 7 days before you move…
- Connect utilities and services (cable, telephone, etc.) at your new home
- Finish using dishwasher, washer/dryer and clean out freezers
- Plan simple meals for moving day and avoid using appliances 2 days prior
- Separate luggage items you need for personal travel
- Clean garden tools, bicycles and any other gardening equipment
- Empty the oil/gas tanks of power tools such as lawn mowers and weed eaters
- Obtain travelers checks and separate medication, cell phones, keys
- Moving day…
- Plan for meals, eat breakfast, pack a lunch
- When driver arrives, point our any items of special concern and high valued items
- Set personal items and luggage in a secure area to be taken with you (automobile)
- Do a final check: closets, storage areas and sheds before driver leaves residence
